"The contemporary Car Coat has little in common with the first car coats. As almost all the first cars were open models, the original coats were long, cumbersome and very much about protection from the elements. As cars gained windscreens, roofs and windows, and heating, the importance of protection diminished and the coats became shorter - to avoid “seating” - and slimmer, as they were no longer worn over other, bulky, warm clothes. The hidden button closing, designed not to snag the safety belt, is perhaps now the only “car” related detail on the modern car coat."
