A look at Eredivisie season 21-22

Our intern Joep will have a look at the coming Eredivisie season which will start this friday, he will shine a light at some promising talents, exciting teams, the title race, and a predicted team of the season.

Last year ADO, FC Emmen and our local pride VVV-Venlo relegated to the Keuken Kampioen Divisie that means there will be three new sides in the Eredivisie: Cambuur, Go Ahead Eagles and NEC, these are some nice cult additions for the Dutch League.

Last weekend we already enjoyed a teaser for the coming Eredivisie season. In the Johan Cruijff Arena Ajax and PSV, the number one and two of last season, battled to be named Johan Cruijff Schaal winners 21/22. The atmosphere was intense with both home and away fans back in the stadium. Partly due to an early disallowed goal and a red card, PSV ran over Ajax, which resulted in a 0-4 victory for the Eindhoven side. We are very excited and can’t wait till Friday, when Go Ahead Eagles – SC Heereveen will be the season opener.

The Eredivisie gems

The Eredivisie is well known for producing some great talents, here is a selection of 5 young and promising talents, you sure need to keep an eye on these young lads.

Emanuel Emegha, Sparta Rotterdam

Emanuel is an 18-year-old striker, he already made his debut and even scored his first professional goal. He is two-footed, fast, and almost 2 meters long. Lets hope he will be a regular starter in Henk Frasers side.

Kenneth Taylor, Ajax Amsterdam

Will Kenneth be the next talented regular starter? We think he will, with almost 50 games in the Young Amsterdam side he is ready for the next step. Taylor is a midfielder, with a great vision and he can deliver assist and goals.

Yorbe Vertessen, PSV Eindhoven

If you follow the Eredivisie, you will already know Yorbe. He played in 18 games last season, he usually came on the field as a substitute, he produced 2 goals and one assist. In the Johan Cruijf Schaal game he also made it to the scoresheet. Vertessen is an extremely fast attacker, he just needs a bit more coolness in front of the goal. Will this season be the season of his final breakthrough?

Mohamed Taabouni, AZ Alkmaar

with the departure of the likes from Boadu and Stengs there will be room for new talent. Will Mohamed make it to the starting eleven? Last year AZ was played the most grown talents throughout the season. Mohamed will surely get some changes to show his talent, he is quick and is verry technical and can produce some real danger for the opponent’s defense.

Paulos Abraham, FC Groningen

My last gem is Paulos FC Groningen paid 2 million Euro for the at that time 18-year-old Swedish striker, a lot of money for the Dutch sub-topper. Paolos is a Swedish youth-international, he is two-footed, quick, and technical. Last year he played nine games for Groningen and netted one time, we are sure that won’t be his last one.

Some dark horses

Last season the Eredivisie top 5 consisted out of Ajax, PSV, AZ, Vitesse and Feyenoord. Will it be the same this season? It could be, but AZ lost a lot of quality with the exit from the likes of: Boadu, Stengs, Svensson and Bizot, Vitesse could also be losing two heavy weights, Bazoer and Tannane have been associated with a move to a bigger club. Some other clubs had some real good business on the transfer market, lets shine a light on two of them, keep an eye on FC Twente and FC Utrecht.

FC Twente

Twente made some real good signings, starting with Lars Unnerstall he is well known in Venlo and is an excellent goalie, Twente also signed former Eredivisie players: van Wolfswinkel, Vlap and Lukoki and signed some Manchester City talents on loan. With Ron Jans they also have a decent coach.

FC UTRECHT

Last year FC Utrecht was one of the teams we enjoyed watching, this season they sold some deadwood and kept their core line-up together. With the likes of Kerk, Maher, Ramselaar, Gustafson and Mahi they got some exciting players.

Eredivisie champions 21-22

We predict that this season will be more entertaining than last season: the fans will be back in the stadium, some clubs made some real good signings, there are some serious talents, and we expect that the title race will be more exciting.

Last year Ajax were named Dutch champions for the thirty-fifth time, it looked like a one-horse race. Ajax created a gap of sixteen points on runner-up PSV and even crossed the 100-goal count. Let’s hope that the coming season will be more exciting in the top of the Eredivisie, with the Johan Cruijf Schaal fresh in memory it looks like it could be. The title race will probably between Ajax and PSV, let's hope it won't be decided until the last day of play.

Lars Unerstall

German Wall, Lars will finally be the number one again. A few years ago, Lars already told an interviewer that there was only one better goalkeeper in the Eredivisie and that was Onana. Now Onana is suspended, and it looks like he’s also set to leave Ajax, so Lars will be the best Goalie.

Jurriën Timber

Last season was the season of Jurrien, at the beginning of the season he was playing for Jong Ajax in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, and at the end of the season he was selected for the Dutch National Squad for EURO 2021. Let’s hope he can continue this frantic development.

André Ramalho

PSV paid 2.5 million to Red Bull Salzburg for the Brazilian defender, he was not known by the big public, but has brought a lot of maturity to Roger Schmidt's squad since his arrival. He looks like a real bargain.

Marcos Senesi

For the whole last season Senesi had been linked to some big European clubs, but with the transfer market heading to an end, and with the beginning of a new season this weekend it looks like we can enjoy watching Senesi one more season.

Owen Wijndal

Same story as Senesi, who would expect that Owen would still be playing for AZ this season? One more strong season and he will surely secure a big move.

Ryan Gravenberch

Ryan had a real strong season last year and was being named Eredivisie Talent of the Season, He’s a typical example of a modern midfielder. Can he follow the footsteps from the likes of van de Beek, De Jong and de Ligt?

Noni Madueke

Since PSV made some changes in their system, Noni’s finally a regular starter. He’s verry mature for his age and is willing to give everything to succeed. If he can continue his tremendous form from last month, he will be a nightmare for every defender in the Eredivisie and the rest of Europe.

Marco van Ginkel

Came back after a verry long recovery period, was being named PSV captain again and looks like the missing piece in their squad. Let’s hope he will stay fit for the coming season.

Dusan Tadic

Aged like wine, Dusan is still one of the most important players for Ajax. The coming season there will be no difference.

Guus Til

Guus is back in the Eredivisie, in the Conference League he introduced himself to “Het Legioen” by scoring a hattrick in his first home game. Will Arne Slot get the best out of him for the coming season?

Antony

He came back in the Ajax squad as an Olympic Champion, is being linked to Bayern Munchen, but looks set to stay for at least one more season. He’s an typical Brazilian player and an absolute fan favorite.

Subs

Maduka Okoye
Very talented young goalkeeper, choose to extend his contract at Sparta and will surely be their first choice for the coming season.

Lisandro Martinez
“The Argentinian butcher” had a small relapse after a good start but seems to be growing back more and more to that same level.

Ray Vloet
After a very good and productive season, Ray was hoping to make a next step to a bigger club in the Eredivisie. But he’s still at Heracles let’s hope he will continue his good form and secure a big move.

Cody Gakpo
“The Eindtovenaar” Gakpo is being named Back-up captain, in the last matches he played, he was not in his best form. But he will surely be a key player for the coming season.

Steven Berghuis
You need to have some ball of to move from Feyenoord to Ajax. Steven has been one of the best for some constructive Eredivisie seasons. And he will surely continue that streak at Ajax.

Coach: Arne Slot

Made AZ the most enjoyable team to watch in the Eredivisie, there are certainly some things that need to change at Feyenoord, but Arne seems to be the right man for the job.
